Boarding

A typical day in the life of a boarder includes play, work and lots of fun. Scrumptious meals pepared in our very own kitchen are served in the student dining hall which buzzes with life and laughter. School hours are long and the day ends at 3:10 pm. By then, the students are done with classes, sports and lunch. Tea time is a way to unwind, relax and reflect on the day’s events. All students are required to sit for mandatory prep time in the evenings, the duration of which is flexible and depends upon exams/assessments schedules at school.

Dinner is served at half eight, and lights are out by ten. Weekends are special for boarders and something they all look forward to. Recreational activites which include trips to the shopping mall, theatre, parks, museums and sometimes to the nearby mountains are planned for the weekends. The holiday is also spent playing cricket, football and squash. All sports facilities, including the swimming pool, are accessible for boarders at all times. Life as a boarder offers new challenges, new opportunities, and new friends await those who join the boarding family at Newlands Islamabad. And what about the insecurity they may feel leaving home and all that is familiar? Early Years

At Newlands, the students in the IB PYP Early Years (ages 3-5) engage in transdisciplinary exploration and play. We aim  for language skills, motor skills, social skills, and academic skills to improve through a play-based approach to learning. Teachers set up a play-based learning environment that offers a variety of opportunities for interesting and meaningful play. The informal development of Approaches to Learning-  thinking, communication, social, self-management, and research skills happens concurrently. The needs of all students are catered for and more formal elements of schooling, such as letter formation, letter recognition, and the formative stages of Language and Mathematics are introduced when students demonstrate understanding or a readiness to learn more. Students will also develop their personal knowledge and understanding of the essential elements of the PYP, deepen their understanding of international-mindedness and develop the attributes of The IB Learner Profile.

Students in a PYP classroom take ownership of their learning by wondering, exploring, learning, sharing, reflecting, and taking actions in and beyond the school community. An inquiry-based unit of study, known as Units of Inquiry, incorporates all essential elements of PYP under a minimum of four transdisciplinary themes. In order to meet the various needs and interests of students, units of inquiry make the learning engaging, relevant to their life, challenging, and significant in a transdisciplinary model, which is globally significant and beyond the structured disciplinary subject areas throughout the Early and Primary Years.
