Co-curricular Activities

Co-curricular activities are offered as part of the extended curriculum at Newlands Multan and are designed to give our students real-life learning opportunities. They include:

  • 47+ clubs ranging from public speaking, science, and teaching, to outdoor activities
  • Opportunities to enrich student learning within and beyond the classroom
  • Structured activities offering life skills
  • Skill-based report each term, enriching the students’ portfolio
  • The Duke of Edinburgh International Award, which is now in its third year
  • Expert coaches who are carefully selected to ensure the safety of your child

At Newlands, as part of our extended curriculum, we offer the Co-Curricular Programme, which offers our students an exposure to a variety of skills.

The following are offered as part of the co-curricular activities.

PYP Clubs - Grades 1 to 4

Music Club

The Music Club focuses on skill development, ongoing learning, the responsibility of learners as musicians, time management, and motor skills. Its activities include:

  • Learning how to play instruments
  • Vocal exercises
  • Creating music in a team
  • Writing lyrics
  • Understanding song structures
  • Understanding fractions in music
  • Creating music from non-traditional instruments
Knitting & Sewing
Sewing and knitting help to develop focus and attention to detail, in addition to developing motor skills that are applicable in a wide variety of fields including medicine and surgery. In this club students learn about the various tools used for knitting and sewing and how to handle them. They also learn to follow patterns and practise hand stitching techniques.
Gardening
The gardening club aims to provide learners with the knowledge and awareness about the environment and helps them create a balanced relationship between humans and the natural world. It develops skills and understanding so that students can grow safe and delicious vegetables without the use of any pesticides.
Puppetry
Puppetry is a form of theatre and another way to express oneself. In the puppetry club, learners get to bring their imagination to life by making puppets with a variety of materials. They get to create and develop a character of their own choosing, and each learner gets a chance to put on a standalone puppet show.
Public Sepaking
Public speaking teaches students how to process and analyse information. It builds confidence and helps students manage stage fright. As they overcome a fear of public speaking they learn to present their points of view persuasively and effectively.
Scouting

Scouting focuses on outdoor and survival skills that support young learners in their physical, spiritual, intellectual and social development. Its activities include:

  • Map reading and navigation
  • Pioneering projects
  • Learning knots and lashings
  • Learning about kinds of fire
  • First aid
  • Tent pitching
  • Understanding the Better World Framework and its thematic areas
  • Backwoodsman cooking
  • Working with survival gadgets
Digital Storytelling
This club supports students’ imagination and creativity while developing their expression and vocabulary. Its activities include creative writing and story-boarding, which are the steps involved in creating and planning an original story from scratch, using digital media to create stories.
Dexter's Lab

In this club, budding scientists are taught about the science laboratory and its equipment, safety procedures, rules, signs, and symbols.

Self Defence

In this club students learn the art of self defence to help boost their confidence. Movement supports a healthy body and mind, developing physical and mental agility, and sharp reflexes.

Calligraphy
Students learn about and practise fundamental calligraphy techniques, such as the angle of pens and basic letter strokes (thin, thick, hook, arcs and ovals). Through the club they develop an understanding of key vocabulary related to calligraphy.
Cooking
The cooking club introduces students to the culinary world, from its fundamentals, like handling utensils and managing temperatures, to following recipes and creating healthy food.
Arts & Craft
Using painting and mixed media, learners explore different mediums and techniques and produce their own unique work.
Woodwork
Students learn to utilise mechanical skills to work with a variety of tools and machines, developing skill and precision. They use mathematical skills for accurate measurement for cutting, fitting, and installation. It provides students the opportunity to step away from the screen and work with their hands.
Bookworm

The Bookworm Club focuses on development of personal preferences, selecting books for pleasure and information. Learners read texts at an age-appropriate level, independently, confidently, and with good understanding. They develop an interest in, and enjoyment of listening to stories. The club’s activities focus on:

  • Phonics
  • Reading
  • Fluency
  • Vocabulary building
  • Types of books (fiction/non-fiction)
  • Facts and opinions
  • Writing
  • Pronunciation
  • Comprehension (audio/written)
  • Communication skills
  • Social skills
Environmental Club

The Environmental Club allows every individual to learn about themselves and their environment, with a focus on their connection to, and responsibilities towards the environment. Students analyse global environmental issues, engage in problem-solving, and take action to address challenges.

This club aims to provide learners with the knowledge and awareness about the environment and helps them create a balanced relationship between humans and the natural world. The aims and objectives of the club are:

  • Suggesting solutions for global environmental issues and threats
  • Creating awareness through art (painting, poster making, etc.)
  • Inquiring about their responsibilities towards the planet on which they live

PYP Clubs - Grade 5

Math and Mind Games

The Math and Mind Games club has been successfully implemented in an upper primary programme and focuses on activities like individual or collaborative problem-solving, and authentic activities that situate mathematics in real-life contexts. The aim of the club is to engage learners in mathematics learning outside of regular class lessons, and to make it a fun and innovative way to learn mathematics. It includes activities such as:

  • Creating a cube with different colours
  • Capacity activities
  • Math club flags (using percentages to create a Maths Club Flag)
  • Tangrams (creating a square and then other shapes)
  • Tall towers (using straws and plasticine to build a tall tower)
  • Sudoku (teaching the techniques of Sudoku)
  • Paper aeroplanes (understanding the dynamics of flying paper planes)
Debating Club
Debating develops critical thinking, and teaches students how to process and analyse information. Instilling confidence and helping students manage stage fright, debating helps them overcome a fear of public speaking and present their points of view persuasively.
TED-Ed
The TED-Ed club is one of a kind and is the only club at Newlands Multan with ties to an international organisation. This club helps learners explore and express their thoughts and ideas in the form of short TED-style talks.
Robotics
This club aims to teach students about the fundamentals of programming, using software for designing and creating working models.
Wordsmith
This club offers students insights into new techniques in learning and increasing their vocabulary. They easily remember new words and spellings using mnemonics to recall meanings and developing vocabulary.
Media Club
Students learn the basics of photography and filmmaking, and are introduced to photo editing and video editing.

MYP Clubs - Grades 6 and 7

Arts & Crafts
Using painting and mixed media, learners explore different mediums and techniques and produce their own unique work.
TED-Ed (MUN)
The TED-Ed club is one of a kind and is the only club at Newlands Multan with ties to an international organisation. This club helps learners explore and express their thoughts and ideas in the form of short TED-style talks.
Tech & Design

The Tech and Design Club is a technology-based club that provides personal growth, leadership, and learning opportunities in technology, innovation, design, and engineering. Members apply and integrate technological concepts through hands-on activities such as:

  • Game building blocks using Minecraft
  • Computer animation using Macromedia Flash
  • Creative presentations using MS PowerPoint
  • Weblogs and website development using Adobe Dreamweaver
  • Computer-controlled SMART Robotics
  • Newlands Multan Inter-house CS, COD gaming challenge competition
Social Squard
Human Library

A Human Library consists of “books” that are human. Each of these books volunteer to take part in the library and share their story. Like a regular library, the Human Library has a book jacket and description, and a “reader” can check out “books” on a topic that he/she/they may be interested in learning more about.

STEAM

STEAM is an approach to learning that incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics as access points to guide student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.
In this club learners create projects, take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, problem-solving techniques, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process that will enhance their research and thinking skills. They learn to see themselves as someone who can do things they could not do before, and to treat failure as an opportunity to learn. Their lessons and experiences will live on long after the projects are gone. A few of the projects learners work on in this club are:

Quality teaching, an enabling environment, and the will to improve on our work are integral to the Newlands philosophy and will remain our focus for the coming years.
